~XYZ Affair-A diplomatic incident in which American peace commissioners sent to France by John Adams in 1797 were insulted with bribe demands from their France counterparts, dubbed X,Y,and Z, in American newspapers. The incident heightened war fever against France.

~Alien and Sedition Acts-Collective name given to four laws passed in 1798 designed to suppress criticism of the federal government and to curb liberties of foreigners living in the United States.

~Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions-Statements penned by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison to Mobilize opposition to the Alien and Sedition Acts, which they argued were unconstitutional. Jefferson's statement suggested that states should have the right to declare null and void congressional acts they deemed unconstitutional.
