Andrew Johnson started out trying to reconstruct the Union as one. He wanted everyone to be treated equal with equal opportunities.
His drive led him to want the same as the Democrats, forcing the republicans behind him to leave his side. The Radical Republicans
insisted on black suffrage and federal protection of civil rights of African Americans. They gained control of Reconstruction
in 1867-called the Radical Reconstruction- and required the ratification of the 14th amendment as a condition of readmission
for former Confederate states. The radical Republicans and Republicans of the Senate and House tried ti impeach Johnson, he
went to trial but was protected by the lack of one vote of 2/3 needed.
Freed slaves had been given the rights to go work and own land. Freedmen's Bureau was an organization to help the ex-slaves
live with what they need. Though they were free go and live anywhere they please, they chose to live on the plantations where
their families were raised.
There were no new economic system to replace slavery. The Bureau came p with an alternative capital called SHARECROPPING.
Sharecropping was a new term for "slavery". It started from small groups of blacks, then it became a family labor.
They worked a piece of land and got half of the crops and profits. Croppers, then, had to live on credit until their cotton
sold. Therfore creditors were entitled to what was owned in money, cotton, or property.
